"Dick" and "Jane" taught millions of American children to read from the 1930s through the 1960s.
First published in 1930 by Scott, Foresman and Company, books featuring
Dick, Jane and their dog, Spot were used in classrooms all over American to
teach children to read, starting with simple sentences.
For
example:
Dick.
See Dick.
See Dick run.
The books were phased out when teaching methodology switched from
"sight reading," that is, learning to recognize specific words to
"phonics," learning the sounds letters signify in order to
"sound out" any given word.
