K00-K03 are listed only for completeness' sake. No one actually has copies.
Feel free to break into Jim Mallon's house and steal the master tapes, though.

I guess it's okay to tell you guys. Jim lives at 1060 West Addison Street in Chicago, Illinois. (ZIP code is 60613, if that helps you navigate.) Good luck.

Elwood: It's a 106 miles to Chicago. We got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.
Jake: Hit it!

No one has these tapes. They have been missing since they moved to commedy central years ago. They even talk about it in some of the Fan Club videos that are sort of a "Making of" thing. It would be nice for them to resurface at some time but I doubt it. Someone has these tapes that worked at KTMA and doesnt even know what they have. I am pretty certain they are on Super Beta which is what a ton of TV stations used in their cameras and on master tapes in the 80s and early to mid 90s. Some still use them today. Anyways, just from a MST3K fan. Mallon does not have them.

If no one has them, how do they have clips of them on the scrapbook tape? Are they... dramatic reenactments?

Is KTMA still in operation? Surely they have to keep records of what they aired when, right? And what do TV stations do with outdated formats of shows?
I know that there are rabid fans out there who have probably exhausted every avenue to get to these episodes, but there's just got to be a way...

Its most likely they are gone. ktma went out of business the same year mst3k went to comedy channel. Nobody thought at the time k01 was made that mst3k was going anywhere. it was a bizarre little homemade filler show on a dying uhf channel, and those first eps were probably reallllly bad. Broadcasting and office equipment was probably auctioned off for salvage sale. Everything else in the studio, "used" tapes, trash, broken ashtrays, old pencils were likely just tossed into a dumpster. When a biz goes under, nobody cares, except to clean up the mess for the next tenant. Also, the tapes are technically illegal, since they didnt get movie rights. The only hope would be a fan video.

In a recent interview Jim Mallon stated that he does, indeed, still have copies of the first KTMA episodes. And, since MST3K is no longer on the air he seems a bit less hateful of those episodes.

Here's the proof straight from the horse's (i.e. Jim Mallon's) mouth, regarding the existence of the "missing" KTMA episodes (see questions #8 and #9):
http://www.mst3kinfo.com/satnews/brains/mallon.html
Of course he could be lying, but what would be the point?
So, even though it sounds like it will still take an act of god to ever get them in fan's hands, at least the possibility does exist!

Welp. Here's a partial:
http://www.utternerd.org/torrents/MST3K_K00_Green_Slime.torrent
supposedly, it should be linked here but I found it elsewhere. CAM rip of all the host segments. yeah, the camera operator does FINALLY calm down... thank god or I'd have to go back in time and rip his arms off (that was obnoxious).

Yeah they don't update the ED2K site anymore, only the torrent site (http://tracker.dapcentral.org/).
If you want to download this episode via ED2K, here's the link: ed2k://|file|MST3K - K00 - 20081007 - Green Slime (with introduction by Joel Hodgson) Mystery Science Theater Theatre 3000 Pilot.avi|131966698|440423A725AB4C375FB965D00E2A7F6E|/
It isn't whitelisted so don't download it through DAP's ED2K server.

Actually, K00, The Green Slime, was only a half hour proof of concept and Pilot screener for the execs at KTMA to see what could be done. Its what convinced them to give it a try for 13 episodes. Oh, and for the camera operator, it was none other than Kevin Murphy, AKA Tom Servo and Professor Bobo!

I found a James Mallon (Jim's real name) in Chicago, IL. The adress is 4732 N Austin Ave, Chicago, IL 60630. His phone number is 773-777-3708.
Perhapse someone with the right equipment could give the number a call and record him saying "Hello"...or recording his answering machine.
It might be a longshot, but it also might be a usefull step for planning the break-in.
