It started happening suddenly, and has occurred 4 times over the past week or so. I've used the player frequently since I purchased it in mid-June, but only had problems recently. And, like I said, it's happened across the board format-wise, which makes me worry.
It's very possible I just may have a bad machine, or it's possible it may not happen again.
I did a basic canned-air cleaning, to make sure there wasn't any hair/fuzz/etc near the lens. We'll see if it makes any difference and I'll keep y'all posted.

It happened again over the weekend. This time the screen started flashing different colors for about 20 seconds, then ejected the disc. The disc was a factory-pressed disc of Akira, and it was clean. Then yesterday while watching another movie, it stuttered for a second during the movie. Upon 'rewinding' the movie and watching the segment again, there was no stutter.
I've come to the conclusion that my machine is definitely malfunctioning. Hopefully mine is an isolated case.

Does anyone know where Philips hid their firmware upgrade section? I went to check out if there was a new firmware upgrade for the DVP642 and my link was out of date, and then I couldn't find any firmware information on their website. Any ideas?
PS With this post I go to 1100 posts and might leave my title of "Prince of Space" with it. Let us see, won't we?
PPS Didn't get a new title, we'll see at 1200.

Sorry to drrrrrrag up this thread again, but since this is still a popular player I thought to pass along a couple links:
The player has its own Yahoo Group.
And the Bad Capacitor Forum, involving the DVP-642.

For my money, nothing beats a modded xbox with xbmc. You can even stream all your stuff from your PC. Not to mention the fact that it plays xbox games. |

Well, the timing on the "revival" of this thread is perfect. I need to preface with a statement that I've been away from here for over a year, so please excuse any blatant ignorance.
I just picked up a new portable DivX/MPEG-4 compatible DVD player, the Philips PET724. I was *hoping* that it would allow me to play my MST-DAP shows away from the computer, but it mostly doesn't work.
I say "mostly" because I HAVE found two files from MST-DAP that do work. Episode 305 (Stranded in space), and promo S19 (MTV Week in Rock) work just fine. Every other MST-DAP file I've tried to play gets rejected with a "file format not supported" error.
Does anyone have any clues as to what's going on? Suggestions that might help? I was about ready to give up, when I got those two random files to play. Now I've got high hopes that it might just be a header issue, and I might convince it to play them?

Never mind. I just started looking at the details, and see that the main codec used changed to XviD around the start of the Season 3 episodes. Now I have to start a qest for the minimum-loss transcoding method to get my older stuff to a format I can watch on TeeVee.

I recently bought one of these Toshiba LCD/DVD combo televisions and to my pleasant surprise, it plays a lot of Divx/Xvid discs. Unfortunately, not very many DAP discs though.
The panel registers as an LG in Windows, I assume the DVD player is the same - one of the LG models that plays Divx. I just bought it as a 2nd tv in the bedroom, didn't even know it could... bonus!

| Yikes! for that price, I'd expect it to play LaserDiscs, have a direct VOD line to Universal, and pop my popcorn as well! |

Mwahahah! After many years I have returned!
Anyways, I've been using the Philips DVP642 for awhile now and am very happy with the video quality. It's great that it can play the MPV2 encoded episodes.
I was curious if anyone knows whether the latest Philips models (DVP5140,DVDR3455H,DVDR3400, etc) can also handle MPV2 and whether there is any improvement. |

I paid about $850. It's a high-definition (720p) widescreen LCD flat panel with built-in DVD... HDMI, component, and PC-VGA inputs. It's got a great picture and the disc player plays MPEG4/Divx files (most of them, though they have to be named xxx.MPG, it doesn't like .AVIs). I think it's a bargain actually.
According to windows the panel is an LG, and I'd assume the DVD player is also, like something similar to the LG/Lite-On players that everyone raves about. |

| Looks like the newer models in the Philips DVP series do not support MPEG4v2. I tried playing an episode on a floor model DVP5960 at Circuit City and got a "Codec not supported" error. |
